A New Year’s Tradition

Children’s Measuring & Interviewing

How it started…

Growing up, every January sometime after New Years, my mom would call us over to the table, pencil and paper in hand, to measure our heights and ask us questions. I didn’t think much of it at the time—it was just “something Mom did.” She’d carefully stretch out the measuring tape, scribble a number on a paper, and step back with a satisfied smile. Though I loved the attention, I remember wondering why it mattered so much. After all, I didn’t feel any taller than the day before!

Fast forward to today, and I finally understand. That simple ritual wasn’t just about tracking inches; it was about capturing the passage of time, celebrating growth, and creating a tangible reminder of how quickly childhood flies by.

Now, as a mom myself, I’ve carried on the tradition with my own kids. Every January when we have a quiet evening, I grab the pencil and call them over to the same spot in our home. We laugh, compare last year’s marks, and marvel at how much they’ve grown—not just in height but in personality, character, and faith.

What once seemed like a small, quirky habit has become one of my most treasured traditions. It’s a way to honor the past, savor the present, and embrace the future with gratitude. Seeing those little hand and foot tracings and their handwriting improving reminds me how fleeting these moments are and encourages me to cherish every stage of this beautiful journey of motherhood.

It’s funny how something so small can mean so much.
